How do I read and send AOL e-mail using Eudora?

AOL's new e-mail servers allow you to send and receive mail using most common e-mail applications. Follow the steps below to create a new e-mail account and configure it so that you can read and send your AOL e-mail using Eudora®.

To create a new e-mail account in Eudora

  1. Sign on to AOL.
  2. Open Eudora.
  3. In the New Account Wizard, click Next.
  4. Make sure Create a brand new e-mail account is selected and click Next.
  5. Enter your name as you would like it to appear on your outgoing e-mail.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter your AOL e-mail address (e.g., GabbyGrace@aol.com).
  8. Click Next.
  9. Enter your AOL screen name (e.g., GabbyGrace).
  10. Click Next.
  11. Enter AOL's incoming mail server: imap.aol.com.
  12. Select IMAP.
  13. Click Next.
  14. Leave the IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix field blank and click Next.
  15. Enter AOL's outgoing mail server: smtp.aol.com. Note: Eudora may automatically insert the incoming server in the field. Make sure you change it to the outgoing server.
  16. Make sure the Allow authentication check box is selected and click Next.
  17. Click Finish.
  18. If prompted, enter the password for your AOL account and click OK.

Notes

  • If Eudora is not your default mail program, you may be prompted to specify whether you want to use it as the default by clicking Yes or No.
  • If the New Account wizard does not display, click the Personalities tab, right-click an open area in the view, and click New.

Configuring Eudora for AOL E-mail

Before you can use Eudora to receive AOL e-mail, you need to change the SMTP server port number. In order to do so, you will need to enable additional configuration options.

To enable additional configuration options

  1. Close Eudora.
  2. Navigate to the Eudora program folder on your computer. By default, the files are saved in C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora.
  3. Double-click the Extrastuff folder to open it.
  4. Right-click the esoteric.epi file and click Copy.
  5. Go back to the Eudora folder by clicking the Up icon.
  6. Right-click an empty area in the folder and click Paste.
  7. Close the Eudora folder.

To change the SMTP server port number

  1. Open Eudora.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Scroll down in the navigation pane and click Ports.
  4. In the SMTP Port (25): field, enter 587.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Restart Eudora.
