This page attempts to answer the most common questions members may have about
receiving mail at their AOL accounts. If your question is not listed here, please
contact the appropriate branch of Member Services
for more help. If you are an external mailer and have questions, or would like more technical
information about how mailing to AOL works, please check the Mailer
FAQ or the Tutorial
The Postmaster group cannot answer any support questions about the AOL client.
- Can I read my AOL e-mail from the Internet without using the AOL
software?
Yes. If the AOL software is not installed on the computer you are using, but
you want to read and send AOL e-mail, you may use AOL Mail on the Web to access your AOL
e-mail via the World Wide Web. AOL Mail on the Web is a free service from America Online
that allows AOL members to send and receive AOL e-mail directly from the Web at www.aol.com.
You can also send and receive AOL e-mail through a third party e-mail client using Open Mail Access.
- What is the correct syntax for AOL e-mail addresses?
The "screenname" is the part of the address that appears before the @ symbol:
screenname@aol.com.
Valid AOL e-mail addresses can not:
- Be shorter than 3 or longer than 16 characters.
- Begin with numbers.
- Contain punctuation of any kind (such as periods, underscores, or dashes).
- Can I request members' personal information from AOL?
AOL will not release confidential AOL Member information. AOL's policy regarding
the release of personal identifying information is very clear: We do not release personal
identifying information. You can read AOL's official privacy policy here.
- Is there a public resource where I can search for Internet e-mail
addresses?
If you are searching for Internet e-mail addresses, you may want to try AOL
NetFind at http://www.aol.com/netfind/aolwhitepages.adp. You can also try
one of the various other public search engines available on the Internet.
- I don't seem to be getting e-mail someone else is sending me.
First, check your spam folder if you have one. (If you have AOL 6.0 or above you may access your spam folder by going to Keyword:
Spam Folder or by visiting your mailbox on AOL 9.0 and above) If you find the mail is in your spam folder, just hit the "This Is Not Spam"
button when you open it. If this has happened repeatedly with the same sender, try adding the
sender's address to your address book.
If you find that you are having problems with mail being delivered to the spam folder,
check the settings on your account, which you can find at KW: Mail Controls.
If the sender is sending from an AOL address, please have them contact the appropriate branch of
Member Services for help.
If the mail is not in your spam folder and the sender is not another AOL member, please contact
the sender of the mail and have them visit our Troubleshooting
page to start diagnosing the problem or the sender can contact us.
- What is the maximum e-mail message size that AOL Members can
accept from the Internet?
The largest piece of e-mail that an AOL member can accept from or send to the
Internet is 16 megabytes. This includes the message text, headers and the attachment combined.
This size cannot be configured by the Member, or adjusted by the Postmaster.
- I got an e-mail with a MIME attachment. How can I decode it?
If you've received an attachment whose name ends in .mme, a MIME decoder will do
the trick. If the sender did not use MIME compliant e-mail software, a MIME decoder will
definitely be needed. You can find more information on this topic on AOL at Keyword:
Mime.
